TOPIC 7. PEDIATRIC HISTORY, EXAMINATION, GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT
Connect the child’s story, current findings and progress over time for rapid revision.
1. THE TOPIC IN ONE CONNECTED FLOW
Pediatric assessment combines information from different sources. The caregiver and child describe what has changed; age and birth history give that change context. Examination shows the child’s present condition, while serial growth measurements and developmental abilities reveal progress over time. Together, these findings guide interpretation and the need for further assessment.
Caregiver’s account + child’s account when possible
→
Neonatal and birth history + usual function
→
Observe stability, then assess relevant findings
→
Accurate measures + serial chart trajectory
→
Caregiver report + age-appropriate observation
→
Reassure, reassess or escalate according to findings
2. KEY CLINICAL CONNECTIONS
Pregnancy and birth events → neonatal risk context → current feeding, alertness and breathing → decide whether prompt assessment is needed.
Caregiver’s report of changed behavior → observation with the caregiver → focused examination → interpret findings against the child’s usual state.
Serial measurements → growth trajectory; reported and observed abilities → developmental progress. A concern in either area needs its own assessment.
3. AIM HIGH-YIELD INTEGRATION REVIEW
- ⭐ Caregiver observations + the child’s own account when possible → a more reliable symptom timeline.
- Pregnancy, delivery and immediate newborn course → context for interpreting neonatal findings.
- ⭐ Reduced feeding or activity + abnormal alertness or breathing → assess the child’s current stability promptly.
- Observation before handling → useful information about posture, movement, interaction and work of breathing.
- Accurate weight, length or height, and head measurements → meaningful interpretation only on an appropriate chart.
- ⭐ Repeated plotted measurements → growth trajectory; one isolated point cannot show the pattern.
- Caregiver report + direct observation across motor, communication and social abilities → age-appropriate developmental interpretation and further assessment when concerns persist.
