🔎 Stepwise Procedure / Approach

  1. Inspect the specimen or image systematically. Note whether the lesion appears vascular and red, blue-red or dark reddish.
  2. Assess its overall morphology. Look for a soft, spongy or blood-filled appearance where this can reasonably be appreciated.
  3. Look for vascular spaces. On a cut surface or microscopic image, identify multiple blood-containing channels or spaces.
  4. Assess vessel size. Decide whether the channels are predominantly small and capillary-sized or large and cavernous.
  5. Examine the endothelial lining. On microscopy, look for bland flattened endothelial cells without significant atypia.
  6. Confirm the vascular contents. Red blood cells should be visible within the vascular lumina.
  7. State the identification. Correlate the findings and identify the lesion as a hemangioma, mentioning the capillary or cavernous pattern when clearly demonstrated.
Exam focus: Base your answer on the morphology actually visible in the supplied specimen or image. Do not invent features that cannot be assessed.
