📘 Step 1 — Curriculum Coverage

This topic uses the AIM Learning Cycle to help MBBS students understand the biochemical basis, pathogenesis, diagnosis, pharmacological management and prevention of coronary artery disease by integrating Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, Community Medicine and Forensic Medicine.

🔹 Biochemistry

 

• Describe the chemical structure and function of cholesterol
• Describe the fate of cholesterol in the body
• Define and classify lipids
• Describe the functions of lipids in the body
• Classify lipoproteins and their functions
• Describe the cardiac enzymes/biomarkers used in myocardial infarction and their pattern of elevation in ischemic heart disease
• Describe the role of Na⁺, K⁺, Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ in cardiac muscle contractility and their biochemical abnormalities
• Describe the cardiac manifestations of vitamin B1 deficiency

• Describe the risk factors and laboratory diagnosis of coronary artery disease
• Define and enlist the stages of atherosclerosis
