  • Corneal scraping is particularly important when microbial identification will guide treatment.
  • Topical corticosteroid alone can worsen active epithelial HSV or uncontrolled microbial keratitis.
  • Progressive stromal thinning in keratitis raises concern for corneal melting and perforation.
  • Acute dacryocystitis presents with painful inflammation over the lacrimal sac; probing is avoided during active infection.
