Must Remember:
- Leukocoria requires prompt localization and exclusion of retinoblastoma.
- Calcification within a retinal mass strongly supports retinoblastoma.
- Bilateral or multifocal retinoblastoma suggests hereditary RB1 disease.
- A dense central congenital cataract threatens vision through deprivation amblyopia.
- A small peripheral cataract with a clear visual axis may be observed.
- Congenital glaucoma produces raised IOP because aqueous outflow is developmentally abnormal.
- Buphthalmos, corneal edema and Haab striae reflect pressure-related stretching in infancy.
- Primary congenital glaucoma is managed mainly by surgery; medication is usually adjunctive.
- Amblyopia requires exclusion of structural ocular disease before diagnosis.
- Amblyopia treatment continues even after the original cataract, refractive error or strabismus has been corrected.
KMU Trap: A technically successful cataract or strabismus treatment does not guarantee normal vision if amblyopia is already established.
