These processes mainly occur in the gastrointestinal tract, especially the small intestine, with major support from pancreatic secretions, bile, intestinal enzymes, and absorptive epithelial cells. Pancreatic enzymes digest carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, while bicarbonate neutralizes acidic chyme entering the duodenum.
